Community Mentoring Program

The ASCILITE Community Mentoring Program (CMP) seeks to involve participants in a professional mentoring relationship built between learners (the mentees) and experienced practitioners (the mentors). While mentees may be experienced in some areas of educational technologies, the ASCILITE CMP provides a vehicle for enhancing specific knowledge, skills or capacities in an area of developing expertise. This arrangement is formalised through a Mentoring Agreement.

We define mentoring as collaboration between ASCILITE members to achieve an agreed goal through dialogue, action and reflection. The focus of these collaborations can span a number of
areas, including:

  • Early-mid career academics/professionals;
  • Educational innovations;
  • Preparation for conference presentations;
  • Enhancing teaching and learning.

The Community Mentoring Program offers two partnering alternatives based on preferences indicated in the expression of interest form:

  • Individual mentoring – a mentee works individually with a mentor on a project;
  • Collaborative mentoring – several mentees to work with a pair of mentors on projects related to a negotiated overall theme.

Research Mentoring Program for Third Space Professionals

The CMP program in partnership with the Learning DESIGN SIG also includes an option to select the Research Mentorship Program for Third Space. It is aimed at third space professionals wanting to get started with research. In addition to personalised monthly mentorship, the program features a series of expert-led online-webinars (one hour each), focused on key areas of professional research development. This initiative will accommodate up to 10 participants, with mentorship provided by Learning Design SIG Leaders and up to 4 mentors. More information about this option is available in downloadable pdf here.

Anyone interested in the CMP is welcome to view the 2025 information session recording to learn about the program and what it means to become a mentor or a mentee

Partnering Commitments

Mentoring partners agree on common goals that are achievable over six months and commit to regular contact at least once a month. They formally participate in an evaluation of the programs and participate in a CMP Symposium at the annual ASCILITE Conference to their experience.

Please note: Participation in the CMP does not guarantee specific outcomes (e.g. promotion).

Benefits of Participation

The benefits of participation in the CMP include:

  • expansion of skills, knowledge and experience in a chosen field;
  • development of communication and leadership skills;
  • opportunity for networking and to create contacts outside of the individual’s own workplace;
  • enhancement of confidence to actively participate in the ASCILITE community.

Application Process

Expressions of Interest are open for ASCILITE members who wish to be a mentee or a mentor for 2026. You can apply here.

This is a competitive process, and successful mentees are matched with mentors who have expertise in applicable areas. CMP mentees are required to be ASCILITE members. Mentees may participate only once in the CMP.
